   AND THE WINNERS ARE . . .

from September/October 1997

. . . a secret! until the evening of the Annual Book Show Dinner to be held Thursday, December 4, 1997, at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Hotel.

Eight judges convened April 24-30, 1997, in a conference room at Addison Wesley Longman in Menlo Park. David Jackson, Director of Marketing at Mayfield Publishing Company; Don Kesner, Manager of Visual Communications at Benjamin/Cummings; Addison Wesley Longman; and Sandy Ryan, Western Sales Representative for Phoenix Color Corporation worked together to judge the 74 entries in the Jackets and Covers category.

At another larger table the 143 books entered this year were pored over by Laura Ackerman-Shaw, Director of Design and Production at Consulting Psychologists Press/ Davies-Black Publishing; Nola Burger, Designer at University of California Press; Rex Ciavola, Vice President of Sales, Western Regional Manager of the Banta Book Group; John Cronin, Manufacturing Director at Jossey-Bass Publishers; and Mike O'Brien, National Sales Manager, Interactive Composition Corporation.

Book entries by categories included: 41 Instructional/Educational; 19 Juvenile Trade, 29 Trade/Scholarly, Image-driven; and 54 Trade/Scholarly, Text-driven. Although the number of entries was lower than previous years, the judges' overall impression was that the quality of entries was higher. What was sorely missed were the Juvenile Trade entries from Harcourt Brace & Company and Klutz Press.

Fran Mitchell, recently retired from her position as Production Manager at University of California Press, has taken on the daunting task of Production Manager of the Book Show Catalog. Telephone and fax wires are humming as information, copy, specs, and duty rosters are transmitted from Roy Wallace and Casi Kostecki, co-chairs of the Book Show, to wrap up the last-minute details for invitations, programs, awards, etc., for the big night.

It will be a magical evening, culminating in the presentation of awards in the five categories mentioned above. Registration begins at 4:30 pm and dinner will be served at 6:30 pm. Books will be on display beginning at 3:00 pm. So mark your calendar, pick out your party clothes, and plan to attend the best BBW event of the year. Remember the date: December 4, 1997.
