Book Show 1996
Celebrating Books Through the Years!

Bookbuilders West will be celebrating books the late afternoon and evening of December 5 at the San Francisco Airport Marriott in Burlingame, California. The 196 books and 112 covers and jackets submitted for judging will be on display beginning at 3:00 pm for those who wish to get a look and compare their favorites with the judges' selections.

Alongside the Bookbuilders West entries will be a special display of award winners from other book organizations around the country, including those from Bookbuilders of Boston and the American Association of University Presses. That makes more than 500 reasons to celebrate books.

Cocktails and refreshments will be available from 5:00 pm, and dinner will be served at 6:30. Then, along with the awards, attendees will see an incomparable show about publishing through the ages. Leslie Austin is coordinating the entertainment team featuring the artistic skills of Era Balestrieri, Don Borges, Wendy Earl, Gwen Larson, Bill Ralph, Karen Richardson, Sandy Ryan, and Joe Smith. As Leslie says, "I really feel you won't want to miss the people who know production-but also offer so much more."

Dinner is $40 per person, and the final registration deadline is Friday, November 15. A registration form is included in this newsletter for your convenience. For those who wish to stay at the Marriott, a special negotiated rate of $115.00 per night is available to guests attending the Book Show. Please contact Marriott reservations at (800) 228-9290 or (415) 692-9100, and identify yourself as a Bookbuilders West Book Show attendee.

The awards for excellence in bookmaking will be the culmination of a week of judging, which took place June 10 through 14. Deliberations were held at Addison-Wesley Longman in Menlo Park, California, and through the efforts of Lillian Hom, Vivian McDougal, Karen Judd, and Joan Marsh, the week ran smoothly. It began with coffee, sweet rolls, and the first Charge to the Jury by mentor Steve Renick. Judging week ended Friday with a leisurely lunch, but in between there was little time to eat or do anything else but deliberate about the entries.

Charlie Clark of C & C Offset Printing Co. (USA), Wendy Earl of Wendy Earl Productions, and Yvo Riezebos of Yvo Riezebos Design made up the cover judge team. Charlie's knowledge of printing and photography, Wendy's production acumen, and Yvo's design expertise made for a well-rounded team. Kaelin Chappell of Harcourt Brace and Company, Katie Clark of Tien Wah Press, Gwen Larson of York Graphic Services, Francis Owen of The McGraw-Hill Companies, and Bill Ralph of Malloy Lithographing made up the book judging committee. This team was also a well-rounded and knowledgeable crew. Kaelin and Francis offered their expertise in design, Katie her experience in production, Gwen her knowledge of composition and manufacturing, and Bill offered his skilled experience in all aspects of publishing.

Of course, entries could not have been submitted without the work contributed by John Walker of Davies-Black Publishing, Randall Goodall of Seventeenth Street Studios, Jim Beley of Fog Press, and Phoenix Color Corporation on the Call for Entries. The results of their efforts were outstanding. A busy team is at work on the final stages of the Book Show Annual. Bookbuilders West extends a preliminary thanks to all contributors.

The Book Show 1996 committee, chaired by Gloria Fontana, Carole Major, and Stephen Thomas, have a great show in store for all. With all this effort and excitement, we are truly Celebrating Books Through the Years!
