Freelance Copyeditors and Proofreaders

Key Curriculum Press is looking for freelance copyeditors and proofreaders. Projects range from 800-page textbooks to 250-page teacher's guides to 125-page supplemental books. 
 
Our heaviest season begins in late spring and ends in late fall. 
 
We require freelancers to pass our copyediting and proofreading tests and to pay close attention to detail. Math and science experience is helpful.

Production Editor 

Key Curriculum Press, a publisher of innovative educational mathematics materials and software programs empowers students to succeed in mathematics and science for lifetime learning.

Job Responsibilities 
Coordinate production of mathematics texts, ancillaries, and electronic media; implementing department procedures; assisting in training staff in editorial-production standards and procedures. 
 
Perform production tasks, including (but not limited to) participating in preproduction planning; establishing schedules in coordination with the Production Department; checking design and art samples and type specifications; managing copyediting and manuscript coding; checking layouts, proofs, and art; incorporating author, editor, and proofreader corrections in proofs. 
 
Coordinate flow of manuscript and proofs to and from authors, editors, and freelancers, maintaining high quality standards; obtain approvals; and meet deadlines. 
 
Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as production editor at a book publisher.
  • Strong understanding of production process for manuscript to bound book and web projects. Copyediting and proofreading skills. Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills. Experience handling multiple projects and working independently.
  • Ability to work with team to plan projects and facilitate problem-solving.
  • Experience supervising freelance copyeditors and proofreaders.
  • Familiarity with Macintosh computers and handling electronic manuscript files.
  • Experience with educational texts, especially mathematics materials; experience with electronic book, and new media production methods is desired.

Associate Content Project Manager/Reprint Coordinator

Responsible for coordinating and managing the reprint process, and managing the production and delivery of content for assigned ancillaries, core titles, and associated media supplements from transmittal through final distribution. Outsources and manages work at Cengage Learning-approved offshore and North American vendors. Is directly accountable for ensuring that assigned projects are delivered on schedule, in line with editorial specifications, and within budget in order to achieve financial targets.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience

  • BA/BS or equivalent work experience
  • 1-3 years experience in print and/or media production or related work experience
  • Project management and organizational skills required; able to successfully juggle multiple projects and to prioritize tasks

Senior Designer, 1-year contract

University of California Press

The University of California Press seeks a senior book designer to design book interiors and jackets for a wide range of subject matter, focusing on both academic and trade markets. The position will be under a 1-year limited engagement contract. Responsibilities include the design and management of approximately 45-50 books per year. Some interiors are adapted from a standard template, while others require original specs. Designer is responsible for design concept, mechanical production, and occasional freelance management of all assigned cover designs. Must work well in a team environment and be able to resolve complex design problems elegantly and effectively.

 
Qualifications: 4 year degree in graphic design or equivalent experience is necessary. Requires substantial experience in typography, book design, production, and the ability to write accurate type specs. Proficiency working with QuarkXpress, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator are also required. Must have good communication and organizational skills as well as the ability to work under tight deadlines. Knowledge of color proofing and printing methods is essential.

UC Press seeks an energetic person to work with the public, our authors, and our staff to process permissions requests directly and

through our "Rightslink" automated permissions system, to process and record fees generated by this permissions activity, and to monitor past due accounts.  This position will also be responsible for updating and maintaining the accuracy of the UC Press' rights-related Filemaker Pro database, for applying for copyright registration for UC Press books, and for providing assistance to the

Intellectual Property Director as needed. 

Requirements 

Candidates for this position must be familiar with copyright and permissions issues and have at least one year's publishing experience.  They must also be willing and eager to keep abreast of the evolving nature of copyright and permissions in the digital age.  We are looking for someone who can effectively prioritize multiple tasks, work proactively to solve problems, and apply initiative and creative thinking to facilitate workflow. The ability to work pleasantly and professionally with external and internal contacts is essential, as is the ability to manage time effectively. An interest in copyright law is desirable, as is a fluency in a foreign language.  Must be PC and Mac friendly with a working knowledge of current versions of Filemaker Pro, Excel and MS Word.

Position Description

The successful candidate will:

  • Driving efficient workflow of projects
  • Budgeting, scheduling, and database-tracking
  • Representing the department as a customer service representative, keeping client informed of status, coordinating and attending meetings as needed to outline project and review work-in-progress
  • Assigning, monitoring, and reviewing work of in-house and freelance editors, proofreaders, artists, designers, compositors, and printers
  • Acting as a focal point for all aspects of project coordination, monitoring resources and appraising management of project budgets and status
  • Coordinating the print bidding process, vending to production, printing resources, and initial distribution to key audiences
  • Closing out all financial aspects of the job and recording final data in the corporate database

Requirements: B.A./B.S. required or equivalent experience , 3-5 years experience , able to obtain U.S. government security clearance

Specific Technical Skills Required

  • Must be proficient in Word, Excel, Acrobat, and InDesign
  • Working knowledge of Illustrator, Photoshop
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
