Seminar Topic: Collaborative Publishing and Web 2.0

Book publishers have, in general, made great use of the Internet in marketing and ecommerce over the past two decades, but have only recently begun to consider alternative approaches to authoring book content via the Internet as well.

Online author collaboration is one possibility.  In the past ten years, open source software development along with wiki and second life technologies have been emerging collaborative possibilities for alternative authoring of book content.

In this seminar, we have three speakers – Bruce Perens from the Open Source Initiative, Helen Harris from Stanford University, and Scott Johnston from Google Sites - who will discuss the definitions, history, impacts, business models, challenges, and opportunities of these technologies.

Then, we have Dan Brodnitz, of O’Reilly Media who will comment on and react to the presentations grounding the discussion in book publishing realities as well as the challenges and opportunities discussed.

Speakers:
  • Bruce Perens - is a leader in the Free Software and Open Source community. He advises large corporations and several national governments on Open Source policy. He is creator of the Open Source Definition, the manifesto of the Open Source movement in Software.
